Terms of use

Plain language, because you should be able to read your terms.

Effective November 4, 2026

The agreement

These terms are an agreement between you and the operator of Murmur — currently Kristen Closson, an individual, until the company that will run Murmur is formed (“Murmur”, “we”, “us”). They cover the Murmur website and web app, the iPhone app and keyboard, and the Mac and Windows apps. By using Murmur, you agree to them. If you don’t agree, please don’t use Murmur.

Our Privacy policy explains what happens to your data. It’s part of these terms.

Who can use Murmur

You must be 18 or older to use Murmur.

A preview, provided as-is

Murmur is AI dictation software in an early preview (a beta). It’s free during the preview. We’re building it as you use it, so features may change, break or go away, and Murmur may be unavailable at times. If we ever start charging for something, we’ll tell you before you pay anything.

Your words are yours

You own what you dictate and what Murmur writes from it. We claim no rights over it, except the permission we need to process it to give you the service — as the Privacy policy describes.

Suggestions and feedback. If you send us an idea, suggestion, problem report or support question, you let us use it, for free, to answer you and to improve Murmur, without owing you anything for it.

Voice samples. If you choose to send voice samples (they’re off unless you turn them on), you give us a free, non-exclusive license to store them and use them — the recording, the text that goes with it, and any description you add — only to measure and improve how well Murmur understands voices. We keep each sample for up to 12 months. You can delete them anytime with Settings → “Delete all my samples”, and the license ends for the samples you delete.

Using Murmur fairly

When you use Murmur, please:

  • follow the law, and respect other people’s rights and privacy;
  • don’t use Murmur to harass, threaten, deceive or harm anyone, or to create or send anything illegal;
  • don’t abuse the service — no flooding it with automated requests, scraping it, probing it for weaknesses, getting around its limits, or using its servers for anything other than Murmur itself;
  • don’t copy, resell or redistribute Murmur’s apps, or try to take them apart, except where the law allows it.

You’re responsible for what you dictate and send. Murmur helps you write; it doesn’t send anything for you. Rate limits exist only to stop automated abuse — they’re set far above any human dictation pace.

AI can make mistakes

Murmur’s polishing, voice edits, translations, summaries and reply suggestions are written by AI. It’s designed to edit what you said, not add to it — but it can mishear a word, get a name wrong, or misunderstand what you meant. Review anything before you send it, especially when it matters (legal, medical, financial or anything else important). Murmur isn’t a source of advice.

Other companies’ services

Murmur relies on other companies to work: AI providers (xAI and Anthropic, through Vercel), Apple (iPhone, Mac, the App Store, TestFlight and speech recognition), Microsoft (Windows), and your web browser. Their own terms cover their services, and we aren’t responsible for them.

If you got Murmur from Apple (through the App Store or TestFlight), Apple’s terms for apps apply too. These terms are between you and us, not Apple, and Apple isn’t responsible for Murmur or its support.

No warranties

Murmur is provided “as is” and “as available”, without warranties of any kind, whether express or implied — including that it will be accurate, available, uninterrupted, error-free, or fit for a particular purpose — to the fullest extent the law allows.

Limits on our liability

To the fullest extent the law allows, we aren’t liable for any indirect, incidental, special, consequential or punitive damages, or for lost data, profits or opportunities, arising from your use of Murmur — including from a mistake in AI output that you sent. Our total liability for any claim about Murmur is limited to the greater of what you paid us for Murmur in the 12 months before the claim, or US$50. Some places don’t allow some of these limits; where that’s the case, they apply only as far as the law allows.

If someone makes a claim against us because of what you dictated or sent with Murmur, or because you broke these terms, you’re responsible for it, as far as the law allows.

Stopping

You can stop using Murmur anytime — delete the app, or clear this site’s data. We may suspend or end anyone’s access if they break these terms or to protect Murmur and the people who use it, and we may end the preview or Murmur itself. The parts of these terms that should continue after that (like your content, the licenses above, and the limits on liability) do.

Changes

We may update these terms as Murmur grows. When we do, we’ll update this page and the effective date above. If you keep using Murmur after a change, the new terms apply.
